Established in 2006, JazzBoston advocates for the diverse Boston-area jazz community of musicians, audiences, venues, and media.
With over 6000 members, we celebrate the African-American heritage, the spontaneous creativity, and the collaborative nature of jazz, one of America’s great contributions to the world’s culture.
JazzBoston’s monthly newsletter to our members educates and unifies our community with news of area jazz events and festivals, including those presented by other area jazz organizations. Our free twice-monthly jazz jams provide an opportunity for aspiring musicians to play alongside a house band of professional musicians, while providing paid opportunities for the house band musicians. Our annual South Bay Jazz Festival at the Suffolk County House of Correction gives staff and inmates an opportunity to hear energetic and inspirational music from local performers, and our twice-monthly online “Hot Club” listening sessions focus in each session on an influential jazz musician, with live commentary by local and national writers, academics, and fellow musicians. We collaborate with GBH Music by curating two live concert series: a free monthly concert series at the Boston Public Library featuring a diverse spectrum of jazz styles from a variety of cultures, and a second series of 4 annual concerts that present influential and notable Boston-area performers at GBH’s Fraser Performance Studio to a live audience. The latter series is video recorded for broadcast on GBH Television, thereby potentially reaching an audience of over one million viewers. We annually give a presentation to the Boston City Council in recognition of International Jazz Day, including a short performance by a Boston-based culturally diverse musician.
