More than 120 Venues Help Make Jazz Week '12 International a Global Celebration

Nearly 250 events at 120 venues throughout Greater Boston spread the music far and wide during Jazz Week '12 International, April 27 to May 6. The international theme, adopted in recognition of UNESCO's proclamation of April 30 as International Jazz Day, was a natural for our city, where jazz is spoken with many different accents year round.

With performances by international artists ranging from Japanese contemporary jazz star Keiko Matsui (photo left, at Scullers) to Grammy Award-winning Panamanian composer/pianist Danilo Perez, the week celebrated the global reach of the music, and Boston's continuing contribution to it.

As always, JazzBoston presented a number of free special events in collaboration with both long-standing and new partners. Among them:

• NEC Noontime Kickoff Concerts in public spaces around town, with student ensembles from New England Conservatory opening Jazz Week for the third consecutive year

• A party co-hosted by JazzBoston and Darryl Settles at Darryl's Corner Bar, where a capacity crowd joined the world's jazz community via the Internet to celebrate the first ever International Jazz Day

• Jazz Swarms @ South Station, a weeklong lunchtime performance series, featuring largish ensembles of the same instrument, conceived and produced by Ken Field, who also led the saxophones

• Jazz Week @ the Boston Public Library, featuring saxophonist and educator Tom Hall's serious fun-and-games workshop, "Improvise Your Life"

• Jazz Week @ the Boston Children's Museum, which showcased "Riffs & Raps-Jazz for the Very Young," a whimsical introduction to the physics of sound that had the young audience blowing on straws and real instruments

Two of the special events presented by JazzBoston and our partners focused on Boston's contribution to the international jazz pantheon:

• Walking Tour of Boston's "Jazz Mecca" with Discover Roxbury staffer Stacy Sutherland, who brought to life a forgotten period in Boston's and America's jazz history

• Book Launch and Party at Wally's Jazz Cafe, where a packed house celebrated the publication of Richard Vacca's long awaited book, "The Boston Jazz Chronicles: Faces, Places, and Nightlife 1937 - 1962," and listened attentively to the author's annual Jazz Week history talk.
