Jazz Was Everywhere in Greater Boston During Jazz Week '10; Save the Dates for Jazz Week '11: April 29 - May 8

Audiences swayed to countless different rhythms, teenagers tap-danced next to masters, and jazz of every stripe was in the air and even on the big screen during the 10 days of Boston's most recent Jazz Week. If you wanted to hear the music, there were more than 250 opportunities to do just that - in art galleries, churches, clubs, restaurants, museums, schools, libraries, and shopping malls all over the Greater Boston area.

Coordinated and promoted by JazzBoston for the fourth straight year, Jazz Week '10 was featured on Ch. 5's "Chronicle" and called "a big tent" that "took over the city" in media accounts. And there truly was something for everyone, including dozens of free events ranging from jazz collaborations with writers, dancers, filmmakers, and painters at neighborhood libraries in Roxbury, Hyde Park, and Newton to jazz photos, jazz jams, and marching bands in East Boston.

"Jazz Week @ the Boston Public Library" was back as JazzBoston presented seven days and nights of free seminars and performances at the Central Library in Copley Square. Among the highlights was "Riffs & Raps - Jazz for the Very Young," where master teachers/performers Arni Cheatham and Bill Lowe (photo above) enchanted 60 children from nearby Headstart programs and pre-schools with an introduction to Tyrone the tenor saxophone and the rest of the Reed family.

The Jazz Week '10 theme, "Made in Boston, Played in Boston," aptly described just how prominent a role the city's jazz scene and its artists continue to play on the world stage. In nearly 100 locations, musicians dug into swing, free jazz, bebop, Latin jazz, jazz fusion and other styles as wide-ranging as the genre itself, making a strong case for Boston as one of the world's premier jazz cities.

You can check out some of what transpired by visiting JazzBoston's Jazz Week '10 Photo Gallery.

Jazz Week '11 promises to be even bigger and better, so save these dates: April 29 - May 8.
