Jazz Week '10 Set for Apr. 23-May 2; Save the Dates, Plan To Participate

Mark your calendars for Apr. 23 to May 2, when Jazz Week '10 transforms the Greater Boston area with a 10-day celebration of the city's vibrant and varied jazz scene and more free and low-cost events than ever before. Coordinated and promoted by JazzBoston for the fourth consecutive year, Jazz Week is a collaborative effort by representatives of the area's entire jazz community, with hundreds of events in scores of venues in and around the city - from clubs, museums, and churches to libraries, universities, hotels, and community centers.

We encourage venues, arts organizations, and other presenters to participate by booking a special jazz event of any kind between Apr. 23 and May 2. We particularly encourage dance, theater, film, digital media, and visual arts presenters to participate by finding opportunities for multidisciplinary collaborations with jazz artists. All participants will share the exposure provided by JazzBoston's multimedia promotional effort, which includes the distribution of 50,000 copies of the Jazz Week program brochure, and posters, radio and TV announcements, print and online ads, and coverage in JazzBoston press releases and our monthly e-newsletter as well as on our website and Facebook page.

For more information about participating in Jazz Week '10, please write to jazzweek@jazzboston.org. Click here to read about past Jazz Weeks.

Radio Waves: WGBH 89.7 FM To Expand Jazz Programming

In the wake of WGBH's recent acquisition of WCRB 99.5 FM, jazz lovers have been hoping that 89.7 FM would maintain its longtime commitment to jazz programming. Those fans can rest easy: JazzBoston has learned from WGBH management that not only will 89.7 FM retain its jazz programming, it will expand it. The station plans to do that by adding two hours of Eric Jackson's show to its Sunday night schedule in the 10 p.m. to midnight slot beginning in January, while retaining Jackson's weeknight program from 8 p.m. to midnight and Steve Schwartz's Friday night program from 8 p.m. to midnight.

With 89.7 FM's move to a more news-oriented format and elimination of its blues and folk programs, the station's continued commitment to jazz and local jazz hosts should be applauded. Check the 89.7 FM website for details and updates.

Members will also get to mingle with some of the city's most talented musicians, players they've seen and heard on stages all over the city. Members, check The Beehive website for info on location and the music lineup, and watch your email box for more details. If you're not already a member or if your membership has expired, join us or renew by Jan. 22, and we'll add you to the invitation list.
