The Makanda Project performs the music of Bill Barron and Ndikho Xaba

Presented by VISIONS at Boston Public Library, Dudley Branch, Boston

Saturday November 19, 2016 @ 7pm

The Makanda Project will break from tradition and devote one of its Dudley Library concerts to music by composers other than Makanda Ken McIntyre. Over the past few years, the group has added some additional bodies of work to its repertoire: the original big band charts of Philadelphia-born saxophonist Bill Barron, like Dr. McIntyre a forward-thinking musician of the post-bebop era; and pianist/leader John Kordalewski’s arrangements of compositions by South African pianist Ndikho Xaba, who lived in the U.S. in exile during apartheid and developed a unique blend of South African and U.S. approaches to jazz. The Boston Citywide String Orchestra will join the group on one composition, and the event will also include live painting sponsored by MassArt’s sparc! the ArtMobile. Kurtis Rivers, Joe Ford, Arni Cheatham, Sean Berry, Charlie Kohlhase – saxophones; Jerry Sabatini, Dan Rosenthal – trumpets; Bill Lowe, Ku-umba Frank Lacy, Alfred Patterson – trombones; John Kordalewski – piano; Carlos Pino – bass; Yoron Israel – drums
