Nat Hentoff Cites JazzBoston as Model for "Jazz Missionaries" in JazzTimes Columns

JazzBoston has a major new fan: revered journalist, author and civil liberties champion Nat Hentoff (photo left). The former Bostonian recently sang the praises of the organization in two separate columns in Jazz Times magazine, calling JazzBoston's efforts a "model for other jazz missionaries around the country ."

In his Aug. 2011, column, "Boston Awakens To Its Jazz Roots: JazzBoston exposes new listeners to the city's vibrant music," the former Village Voice columnist traced the beginnings of JazzBoston six years ago through its organizational development and creation of programs to help promote and grow the local scene. "Passing the Jazz Torch: How the non-profit JazzBoston creates new jazz generations," Hentoff's Oct. 2011, column dug more deeply into the details of those efforts, including Jazz Week and the Riffs & Raps family of programs.

"Deeply honored" only begins to describe what Nat Hentoff's words mean to JazzBoston and the many volunteers and supporters who have helped make our organization what it is today.

Discover Roxbury's Jazz History Project Wants You!
Jazz exploded out of Roxbury in the 1950s and '60s, but the heyday of the community's jazz scene remains largely undocumented. That's about to change as Discover Roxbury's oral jazz history project,"The High Notes of Jazz Roxbury," gets underway. Emmett Price, chair of Northeastern University's African American Studies Department and a JazzBoston board member, is an advisor to the project, which was made possible by a grant from Mass Humanities. JazzBoston, which provided a letter of support for the grant application, is one of the collaborating organizations.

You can follow the project's progress and share your own stories of the times at the monthly Jazz History Speakers Series this winter. The sessions are free, and everyone is welcome. The next session, on December 14 at Haley House Bakery Cafe, 12 Dade St., Roxbury, from 7 to 9 p.m., will be hosted by the project's researchers, Luke Walker and Stacy Hill-Sutherland, who will introduce some of the prominent figures on the scene.

If you performed in or attended the clubs or have photos of the '50s and '60s Roxbury scene, you can help. Please email Luke or Stacy.
