JazzBoston and Dayla Arabella Adventures are still accepting reservations for our third annual trip to the Panama Jazz Festival, Jan. 16 - 22 in Panama City, Panama, the nation known as the Bridge of the Americas. This year's lineup may be the best ever, and our partnership with the Danilo Perez Foundation, the beneficiary of the festival proceeds, gives us access to an array of VIP events, including private receptions with the U.S. Ambassador to Panama and the Administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, the Gala Concert and Reception at the historic Teatro Nacional in the Old City, and a private tour of the Miraflores Locks.

Leading the lineup is legendary Panamanian saxophonist Carlos Garnet, the 2012 festival honoree. Other headliners include Tito Puente Jr., Chucho Valdes (photo above), Omara Portuondo, John Scofield, Charlie Sepulveda, Luis Bonilla, Teri Roiger, and the Jed Levy Quartet, a Jazz at Lincoln Center road band presented by JALC and the U.S. State Department. JazzBoston's First Music Media Meet-and-Greet Draws a Crowd to Darryl's Corner Bar

The 50 assorted media maven and debutants from all over the Greater Boston area who gathered at Darryl's Corner Bar last month at the invitation of JazzBoston and the Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) had one fundamental thing in common - the desire or need to communicate about music. With everyone at a different stage in the transition from traditional to new media, we figured our guests would have a lot to talk about, and they did.

The occasion for JazzBoston's first Music Media Meet-and-Greet party was the Boston visit of JJA president Howard Mandel (at left in photo above with music writer Bob Blumenthal, courtesy of Kayana Photography). Mandel also participated as a guest interviewer in JazzBoston's "Meet Boston's Musicians" program at the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival two days later.

Among the musicians, writers, bloggers, broadcasters, video producers, web designers, and photographers at this special event: Tom Lucci, WICN Public Radio, 90.5 FM; Michael Quinlin, MassJazz; Charles McEnemey, Future of Music Coalition; Steve Schwartz, WGBH 89.7 FM; Tina Gao, Magic 106.7 FM; Tom Hall, saxophonist, educator, author; Ken Field, saxophonist, band leader; Bob Young, music writer, Boston Herald; Lydia Liebman, vocalist, WECB Online Radio; Kent Thompson, Letters of Marque Productions; Jay Fedigan, video documentary producer; Jacob William, bassist; Nick Grondin, guitarist; and Melissa Cantor, WECB, WERS.

Much appreciation goes to Darryl Settles, who was as always the perfect host.
