Wally's Owners Elynor Walcott and Sons Honored by Jazz Journalists Association; JazzBoston Organizes Local Awards Party June 11

Elynor Walcott (photo left) and sons Paul, Frank, and Lloyd Poindexter, who own and run Wally's Cafe have been named 2011 "Jazz Heroes" by the Jazz Journalists Association (JJA). JazzBoston, which nominated Walcott and her sons for the award, is organizing a special "satellite party" at Wally's on June 11, 1 - 5 PM, to be held simultaneously with the JJA Awards gala that afternoon in New York City. WGBH jazz radio hosts and former JJA honorees Eric Jackson and Steve Schwartz will be on hand to present the award to the family when it is announced in New York

The JJA's Jazz Heroes award honors "activists, advocates, altruists, aiders and abettors of jazz who have had significant impact in their local communities." Walcott and her sons are being recognized for their decades-long dedication to providing a forum for young Boston area players to develop their craft.

Entry to the party is free, and guests will be able to watch a live videostream of the New York gala - including performances by an all-star lineup and presentations of an array of awards for excellence in jazz music and journalism - on a large screen on the club's stage. Cash bar with snack chips provided by JazzBoston and chocolate chip cookies provided by Scullers Jazz Club.

JazzBoston invites jazz lovers of all persuasions and jazz journalists in all media to join us as we celebrate the special place Wally's has occupied on Boston's jazz scene for nearly 65 years. It's going to be a great party!

Jazz Week Tributes to Eric Jackson Thrill Fans at Scullers, Regent Theatre
The two-night Jazz Week tributes to Eric Jackson celebrating the 30th anniversary of his jazz program on 89.7 WGBH radio served as the perfect way for Boston's jazz community not only to tip their hats to the longtime radio host, but also to be part of something that more than one attendee called "historic."

The May 2 all-star jam at Scullers packed the Boston club and featured scintillating performances by 50 musicians configured into 16 ensembles by producer Fred Taylor (in photo left above, with Jackson). Among those appearing were Danilo Perez, Terri Lyne Carrington, Rebecca Parris, Grace Kelly, Cecil McBee, Ralph Peterson, George Garzone, Phil Wilson, and Bob Moses. JazzBoston also presented a clearly moved Jackson with the Roy Haynes Award for "exceptional contributions to jazz and the jazz community." In presenting the award, JazzBoston executive director Pauline Bilsky cited Jackson's "deep pride in Boston's jazz scene and his unflagging support for new talent that has made his show the springboard to a career for scores of jazz artists over the decades." One after another, the performers told Jackson they wouldn't have been there if it weren't for him. Rebecca Parris summed up the feelings of everyone in the room when she sang to Eric, 'In this world, I'm so glad there is you.'"

Four nights later, the Regent Theatre hosted a night of rarely seen videos of jazz greats selected by Jackson from the collection of jazz historian Hal Miller, who served as the event's MC. The performances by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Pharoah Sanders were a fitting finale to a pair of salutes to one of Boston's most beloved radio hosts.
Nearly 300 Events Capture City's Imagination During 10 Days of Jazz Week '11

In what turned out to be the largest number of events yet in Jazz Week's five years, music lovers of all ages - including (photo left) 15-month-old Rory with her father, Austin McMahon, a member of the Quartet of Happiness, at the Children's Museum - had plenty of opportunities to hear live jazz. Nearly 300 events took place in 100 venues and locations all across Greater Boston, and many were free.

Among the free events: the JazzBoston-presented Jazz Week @ the Boston Public Library, which included outreach to Boston's film community courtesy of Lisa Simmons, director of the Roxbury International Film Festival; a fascinating conversation with four leading members of the city's "creative music scene,"who punctuated their points with brief performances; and a presentation by jazz historian Dick Vacca on legendary big bands that shaped Boston jazz. Also free were the same-instrument Jazz Swarms at the State Transportation Building, organized by reedman and bandleader Ken Field, and the kickoff day noontime concerts performed by New England Conservatory student ensembles around the city.

You can check out the highlights of the week, including scenes from the two-night tribute to Eric Jackson, in the two new Jazz Week albums on JazzBoston's Facebook page.
