Scullers, Berklee Sign On As Sponsors for Jazz Week '11, Set for Apr. 29-May 8

JazzBoston thanks Scullers Jazz Club and Berklee College of Music for signing on early as Sponsors for Jazz Week '11. Both have been strong supporters of Jazz Week from the very beginning, with Scullers a Lead Sponsor every year since 2007, and Berklee a Venue Partner in 2007 and 2008 and a Major Sponsor for the first time in 2010.

Jazz Week returns for the fifth consecutive year next spring from April 29 to May 8, with the 2011 theme, "This Is Jazz." Fans should circle the dates for the 10-day celebration that last year featured more than 250 events, many of them free or low cost, at nearly 90 venues. We expect those numbers to grow in 2011, so musicians, presenters, and venue owners should start planning now to participate. You can find more information here about participating in Jazz Week '11.

Cafe Tatant to Bring Music, Dining and Dancing to Hibernian Hall Every Thursday

The city has a new spot to step out and hear great music. Starting Dec. 2, Roxbury Center for Arts will transform Hibernian Hall's grand ballroom into Cafe Tatant, a relaxed listening lounge and supper club that features jazz, rhythm and blues, and soul music every Thursday. George Huggins of Ethnica Gourmet Catering will provide the fine dining, and on opening night vocalist Diane Richardson and her group will provide the sounds. Featured with Richardson will be Bill Lowe on trombone, John Kordalewski on piano, Ron Mahdi on bass, and Ralph Peterson on drums.

The December dates are sponsored by Brother's Supermarket in Dorchester and Boston Beer Company in Jamaica Plain. Hibernian Hall is located at 184 Dudley St., Roxbury.

"What we're trying to do with Cafe Tatant is to host less of a noisy, stand-up nightclub and more of a relaxed, sit-down listening room," said Dillon Bustin, ACT Roxbury's director. "We'll be serving a gourmet meal and beverages, but the focus will be on the performers. We'll be honoring the local legends of Boston jazz, and also shining a light on younger, contemporary players.

"The idea is not to recall the 'smoky, dark, cave-like' clubs of the 1940s, but rather the elegant supper clubs of the same era. Proceeds will benefit the non-profit programs of Roxbury Center for Arts, and we'll be offering it all on the Boston side of the Charles River, in Dudley Square in the heart of the Roxbury community."

JazzBoston's "Riffs & Raps" Partnership with the Boston Public Library Brings Jazz to Neighborhoods in December

A special winter performance tour of JazzBoston's "Riffs & Raps: Jazzin' the Generations" program featuring saxophonist Arni Cheatham, bass trombonist, tuba player and percussionist Bill Lowe, and keyboard player Kevin Harris will be warming up eight neighborhood branch libraries in December.

The trio will take seniors and their juniors on a live musical journey through time, from the roots of jazz in blues and spirituals through the Great American Songbook right up to the many sounds of jazz today, with excursions into other music traditions at home and abroad along the way.

Click here for locations, dates and times of the sessions that will take place in branches in Dorchester, Roxbury, East Boston, Jamaica Plain and Brighton.

"Riffs & Raps: Jazzin' the Generations" was developed by JazzBoston specially for the Boston Public Library. It is presented in partnership with the Library and funded by an anonymous gift through the Boston Public Library Foundation. The program is the most recent addition to a history of Library partnerships with JazzBoston dating back to 2007 that includes the annual Jazz Week @ the Boston Public Library, the original Riffs & Raps after-school program for at-risk teenagers, and the Riffs & Raps children's program. JazzBoston also assists with jazz programming for the Library's Concerts in the Courtyard series each summer.

The series will travel to the other branches in the Library system after a winter hiatus.
