Musicians, Presenters, Venue Owners: Book Live Jazz During Jazz Week '11; We'll Promote It - Free of Charge!

Jazz takes center stage throughout Greater Boston when Jazz Week returns for the fifth consecutive year next spring from April 29 to May 8. Once again JazzBoston will mount an extensive marketing campaign to put a spotlight on the great music the city's musicians, presenters, and venue owners bring to fans year-round. Using print, broadcast, and electronic media, we will promote - free of charge - every jazz-related event that's booked during this annual 10-day celebration. Press releases, brochures (50,000 of them), posters, print ads, radio and TV announcements and interviews, websites, social networks, and blogs will all be part of the effort.

With the public's attention focused on the music and the places it can be heard, this is the perfect time to consider presenting that very special project. Been thinking about teaming up with artists from other disciplines? Performing for audiences you don't normally reach, like families, seniors, or children? Or taking your project to a space you've always wanted to try? JazzBoston will do everything we can to collaborate with you and support you.

Participation in Jazz Week has grown every year as artists, presenters, and venues have extended its boundaries musically and geographically. Last year for the first time Jazz Week even had a spinoff, Jazz Week East, as East Boston produced its own celebration. That's a trend we'd love to see continue. We hope you'll start planning your Jazz Week '11 events now. Click here for more information about participating in Jazz Week '11.

JazzBoston thanks Scullers Jazz Club for its strong support of Jazz Week right from the beginning. Scullers has been a Lead Sponsor of Jazz Week every year since 2007 and just signed on for Jazz Week '11.

JazzBoston Tent in Center of Action at Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival

Under gorgeous skies that brought summer back for one final weekend, the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival played host to thousands on Columbus Ave. on Saturday, Sept. 25, and plenty of them spent time at the busy JazzBoston tent. Staffed by volunteers and JazzBoston board members, the tent connected fans with the music in several ways.

At JazzBoston's "Meet Boston's Musicians" table, 17 artists took turns throughout the day talking about their music and signing CDs. Among the musicians were (photo left, seated at table, l to r) trumpeter and JazzBoston board member Jason Palmer, saxophonist Grace Kelly, and pianist Al Vega. WGBH jazz radio hosts Eric Jackson and Steve Schwartz sat in with the musicians for part of the afternoon, a surprise treat for passers-by who knew them only by their voices.

Other visitors stepped into the mini TV studio to answer the question, "What's your jazz?" The videos will become part of JazzBston's long-term campaign to spread the word that jazz is for everyone. Watch for them soon on the "What's Your Jazz?" page of the JazzBoston website and on JazzBoston's Facebook page and YouTube channel. Selected videos will also be used in public service announcements on cable and broadcast TV.

Jazz Back on Columbus Ave. at Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen

For years, club and restaurant owner Darryl Settles hosted live music, including plenty of jazz, at Bob's Southern Bistro at 604 Columbus Ave. That changed when new owners took over the space a few years back, but with the recent opening of Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen, the music is back.

Settles has live jazz scheduled for Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to midnight, and Fridays and Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., with the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month featuring Urbane Project, an ensemble of faculty members from Berklee College of Music.

"We are excited to be part of Boston's jazz scene and its lively community," Settles told JazzBoston. "We strive to be a spot where musicians can come on a regular basis and feel wanted and admired."

Jazz lovers sampling the new spot's "regional American cuisine" won't have to look far to feel the jazz vibe: prominently displayed inside are a variety of pieces of jazz-related art, including photos of jazz greats by Lou Jones.
