Kudos to NEC's Jazz Studies Program at 40

Congratulations to New England Conservatory, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of its Jazz Studies program during the 2009-2010 academic year. Founded by composer, author, conductor, and former NEC President Gunther Schuller, the NEC program is the first-in-the-nation fully accredited jazz studies curriculum. Starting Oct. 18, the Conservatory is doing it up big with a week of events in and around the city, many of which are free. Highlights of "Hot and Cool: 40 Years of Jazz at NEC," include a "Summit" concert on Friday, Oct. 23, at Jordan Hall featuring Schuller, Ran Blake, Cecil McBee, Bob Brookmeyer, Don Byron, Roger Kellaway, Fred Hersch, Dominique Eade, Rachel Price, and the NEC Jazz Orchestra. That will be followed on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Jordan Hall by the Wayne Shorter Quartet with NEC's Philharmonia.

Other highlights include jam sessions at Wally's Cafe (Oct. 18), a double bill of The Fringe and Quartet of Happiness at the Lily Pad (Oct. 19), and a "Generations of Jazz" series of concerts at the Western Front (Oct. 20), Scullers (Oct. 21), and the Regattabar (Oct. 22). Also scheduled are a number of seminars and workshops that are free and open to the public, including a panel discussion moderated by WGBH's Eric Jackson with Schuller and others titled "Breaking the Mold: Introducing Jazz Into a Classical Conservatory," and a master class with Hersch. Both take place in the afternoon on Oct. 23.

A Great Day at Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival...and at JazzBoston Tent

The recent Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival on Columbus Ave., Boston, drew an estimated 80,000 people, many of whom stopped by the busy JazzBoston tent staffed by volunteers. At JazzBoston's "Meet Boston's Musicians" table, visitors connected with the nearly 20 artists who talked about their music and signed CDs. Among the musicians were (photo left, at table front to back) Elan Trotman, Patrice Williamson, and Hiro Honshuku. Other visitors stepped into the mini TV studio to answer the question, "What's your jazz?", while still others were taped throughout the festival grounds by a roving cameraman accompanied by radio personality Jeff Turton. See the JazzBoston website for a gallery of photos of the action at the JazzBoston tent. Video clips of the interviews coming soon.

If you missed BeanTown, you can still be part of JazzBoston's ongoing "What's your jazz?" multimedia campaign by emailing videos of yourself or your friends to myjazz@jazzboston.org for posting on JazzBoston's website and Facebook page. Just begin with the words, "My jazz" or "My jazz is" and keep the length to 20 seconds or less. For more info about the campaign, click here.
