JazzBoston Hosts 20 Hometown Musicians at BeanTown Jazz Fest Sept. 27

Twenty of the city's most creative jazz artists will be on hand to talk with fans about their music and the scene when JazzBoston makes its third appearance at the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival on Saturday, Sept. 27, from noon to 6 p.m. The free outdoor festival takes place on Columbus Ave. between Mass. Ave. and Burke St.

Look for the JazzBoston tent and its "Meet Boston's Musicians" table where these artists are scheduled to appear: Leonard Brown, Dave Bryant, Terri Lyne Carrington, Jorrit Dijkstra, Garrison Fewell, Ken Field, Ron Gill, Kevin Harris, Eric Hofbauer, Hiro Honshuku, Bill Lowe, Maxim Lubarsky, Carmen Marsico, Myanna, Bruno Raberg, Diane Richardson, Larry Roland, Oscar Stagnaro, Elan Trotman, and Patrice Williamson.

Also at the JazzBoston tent you can contribute your words to the interactive exhibit, "What Does Jazz Mean to You?", created in collaboration with The Art Connection. Visit JazzBoston at BeanTown - and bring your friends.

Carrington and Cindy Blackman kick off this year's festival with a drum summit at Berklee Performance Center on Friday, Sept. 26. Saturday's festival features concerts on three stages by Randy Weston, Cyrus Chestnut, Les McCann, Javon Jackson, Kurt Elling, James Carter, Andre Ward, Walter Beasley, Russell Malone, and others. JazzBoston members are eligible for free tickets to two upcoming events in September. This weekend's inaugural Newton Jazz and Wine Festival kicks off with an afternoon of free, outdoor jazz on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Washington Park, Newtonville, from noon to 6 p.m., featuring Patrice Williamson and the Rusty Scott Organ Trio with special guest Bill Pierce, the Quartet of Happiness, and Fred Woodard (photo left) and his trio. The first JazzBoston member who writes to newsletter@jazzboston.org will receive a pair of tickets to the festival's Sunday night show featuring Williamson with Scott's trio at Ariadne Restaurant & Bar, 344 Walnut St. (and Washington Park) Newtonville. The presenters of the 31st annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert, "A Tribute to 'Trane," at Northeastern University's Blackman Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 8 p.m., are offering JazzBoston members a pair of tickets to the show featuring Guru's Jazzmatazz, MC Solar, DJ Doo Wop, Brownman and David Scott. The first JazzBoston member who writes to newsletter@jazzboston.org will receive the two general admission tickets.

JazzBoston members receive discounts at the Regattabar, Scullers, the Jazz Club at the Multicultural Arts Center, The Beehive, Ryles, The Redline Restaurant, the Vernissage Restaurant's "JazzThursdays at Vernissage," Restaurant Laura's "Thursday Night Jazz To Dine By", and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's Thursday evening jazz series, "Jazz at the Gardner." The Makanda Project (photo left) is among the acts set to appear on Saturday, Sept. 20, at this year's Roxbury Day on the grounds of the Dillaway Thomas House from noon to 5 p.m. Also appearing will be Jazz 208 led by Gilbert White, and a variety of dance and spoken word artists. Presented annually by the Roxbury Action Program since 1984, this year's celebration marks the organization's 40th anniversary.

New England Conservatory pays tribute to reedman Jimmy Giuffre, who died earlier this year and was a long-time NEC faculty member, with a free concert at Jordan Hall on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m.

Upcoming free shows at Berklee include "The Art of the Duo" with guitarists Sheryl Bailey, Jack Pezanelli, and Garrison Fewell, Tuesday, Sept. 23, 7:30 p.m., at David Friend Recital Hall; and guitarist John Baboian and his quartet of Daniel Ian Smith, Bruce Gertz, and Larry Finn on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m., at Berk Recital Hall. Outdoors, tuba player Dan Carpel leads a group at 300 Athenaeum St., Kendall Square, Cambridge, on Thursday, Sept. 25, at noon. View the Berklee calendar of events.

Musicians: Your Feedback Sought for Career, Professional Development Survey

The Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston, an arts service organization, is looking for input from working musicians in order to "design a program that will provide knowledge and skills that will help musicians to better manage their careers." The organization is currently conducting research to determine what the form and content of such a program might be. Click here if you're interested in taking the brief survey.
