Busy Jazz Fall on the Horizon; Look for JazzBoston at BeanTown

The 31st annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert and the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival are among the September highlights of what's shaping up as a busy fall for jazz in Boston. The Coltrane Memorial Concert, which takes place on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Northeastern University's Blackman Theatre, features hip-hop veteran Guru and Jazzmatazz along with producer Solar (photo left) in a tribute to Coltrane. JazzBoston will once again have a significant presence at the free Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival on Saturday, Sept. 27, from noon to 6 p.m. on Columbus Ave. between Mass. Ave. and Burke St. Look for the JazzBoston tent and its "Meet Boston's Musicians" table, where more than a dozen of the city's talented jazz artists will be on hand throughout the day to talk with fans about their music. This year's festival kicks off with a drum summit at Berklee Performance Center on Friday, Sept. 26, led by Cindy Blackman and Terri Lyne Carrington, and continues on Saturday on three stages featuring Cyrus Chestnut, Les McCann, Kurt Elling, Randy Weston, James Carter, Walter Beasley, and more. This year's Roxbury Day celebration on Sept. 20 will have a strong jazz flavor with the Makanda Jazz Project and Jazz 208 led by Gilbert White scheduled to perform. The event runs from noon to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Dillaway Thomas House and will also feature dance and spoken word artists. Presented annually by the Roxbury Action Program since 1984, this year's celebration marks the organization's 40th anniversary.

Looking for one last jazz getaway of the season? The Tanglewood Jazz Festival on Labor Day weekend features a lineup that includes Cambridge native Nnenna Freelon, Boston-based reedman Jason Palmer, and main stage performers Dianne Reeves, Terence Blanchard, Jane Monheit, Eddie Daniels and JazzBoston Artistic Adviser Donal Fox. Restaurant Laura, which has added Thursday night jazz to its musical menu to complement its longtime offerings of Cape Verdean sounds, is the latest local restaurant to become a JazzBoston Membership Partner. Located at 688 Columbia Rd., Dorchester, Restaurant Laura is renowned for its welcoming environment and tasty Cape Verdean cuisine. JazzBoston members will receive a 10% dinner discount on Thursday nights. This Thursday, Aug. 21, the restaurant features a special "Wine Dinner" with a performance by the trio of vocalist Patrice Williamson, pianist John Kordalewski, and trombonist Bill Lowe. Upcoming: Fred Woodard Trio, Aug. 28; Trio Grande, Sept. 4; Diane Richardson and John Kordalewski, Sept. 11 & 25; and Candida Rose and John Kordalewski, Sept. 18.

Membership Partner Vernissage Restaurant, 1627 Beacon St., Brookline, has two August dates coming up for its "Jazz Thursdays at Vernissage." The Andres Espinoza World Jazz Ensemble sets up Aug. 21, followed by a special performance on Aug. 28 featuring pianist/composer Ran Blake and his ensemble with guest vocalist Dominique Eade (in photo, above, with Blake). JazzBoston members receive a 10% dinner discount on Thursdays.

Vernissage was among a number of venues showcasing jazz in and around Brookline's Washington Square that was featured in a Boston Globe article this week about the area's growing jazz scene. Upcoming events at Vernissage and scores of other area venues can be viewed on the JazzBoston events calendar at www.jazzboston.org.

JazzBoston members also receive discounts at the Regattabar, Scullers, the Real Deal Jazz Club and Cafe, The Beehive, Ryles, The Redline Restaurant, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's Thursday evening jazz series, "Jazz at the Gardner," which resumes in September. Summer may be winding down, but there are a number of entertaining free shows left in August as part of Berklee's student and alumni live music series. Perugia, Italy, native and jazz singer Eleonora Bianchini (photo left) performs with her quintet on Wednesday, Aug. 20, in the courtyard of the Charles Hotel, Cambridge, while saxophonist Pat Carroll leads his ensemble on Thursday, Aug. 21, at noon at 300 Athenaeum St., Kendall Square, Cambridge, and then at 6 p.m. at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. The Berklee Monterey Quartet, comprising students chosen to perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival, appears in the courtyard of the Charles Hotel on Aug. 27 at 5:30 p.m., and on Aug. 28 at noon in Kendall Square. Outside the city you can catch Steve Taddeo and his Swing Senders at the Waltham Farmers Market, One Moody St., Waltham, on Aug. 30 at 11 a.m; "Jazz and Blues on the Green" at the Pinehills, Plymouth, on Sept. 6 and 7 from 1 to 5 p.m., featuring Deborah Henson-Conant, Grace Kelly, Jeff Pitchell, and Mighty Sam McClain; and the Wolverine Jazz Band at the Malden Public Library, 36 Salem St., Malden, on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
