Join the Quartet of Happiness on Friday, April 27th and be a part of their next major project! The Quartet will be joined by the QOH Big Band to produce a night of theatrical jazz and family fun at the Cambridge YMCA Theater at 7pm. The show will be professionally recorded and filmed for a live DVD to be released later in 2012. Capping off the night will be a special performance by Kelly Roberge’s “All Of Us� solo quartet.

Quartet of Happiness takes modern jazz and infuses it with a hefty dose of cheekiness and irreverent humor, wrapping it all up in the sort of theatrics reminiscent of Blue Man Group. The group has made it its mission to take jazz out of the ivory tower and make it accessible to a wide-ranging audience. Playing games, wearing costumes, and engaging the audience with their antics, the Quartet of Happiness’ performances are at times reminiscent of a cross between an improv comedy show and a theater of the bizarre. It’s part jazz, part performance art, and all of it the child of insane wit.

A collective ensemble, The Outnumbered began in 2008 when California saxophonist and composer Jason Robinson partnered with Boston-based creative music stalwarts Charlie Kohlhase, Josh Rosen, and Curt Newton. Shortly after, the remarkable bassist Bruno Raberg joined the group. Focused on developing and performing original music, the Outnumbered seamlessly moves between beautiful melodies, dissonant abstraction, heavy grooves, and freer rhythmic soundscapes. Their music is robust, beautiful, and focused.

ZUMIX's Jazz Week East begins with a soulful nod to the blues. It features a quartet of veteran Boston musicians with Rick Hammett, trumpet and tenor sax, Joe Bargar, keys and vocals, Ed Lucie, bass and Kenny Hadley on the drums. They’ve worked with Aretha, Stevie Wonder, Buddy Rich,Otis Rush and Tony Bennett to name just a few. With influence from the likes of Ray Charles, Doctor John and Professor Longhair, they will bring their dedication to the groove and a soulful sound to the ZUMIX stage.

ZUMIX is a non-profit youth development organization that provides free music and creative technology programming for low income, at-risk youth.

This concert features five John Harbison jazz song premieres for voices, jazz ensemble, and small groups: That Time is Now, The Moon is Down, Now That You’re Here, I Told You So, and Yehudi Wyner.

Atlas Soul is a band performing original music that celebrates and bridge Afro-Mediterranean melodies & grooves with Jazz & Funk thus naturally creating unique & powerful genres of music one could describe as Maghrebian-Funk, Rap’n Raï and Shaâbi-Jazz. Atlas Soul sings in French, Arabic, Hebrew and English. The lyrics speak of love, natural wonders, oppression, poverty, and of the melancholy of immigrants.

The recording “Plunge” is a truly unique duo project exploring the world of sounds and shapes. It is all based on acoustic duo improvisations and the effects and sound manipulations were created after the improvisations, the only sound source was trumpet and acoustic bass.

Phil Grenadier ia an internationally renowned trumpet player that has performed with John Scofield, Jimmy Cobb, Bill Stewart, Kurt Rosenwinkle and others.
Bruno Raberg is a mainstay on the Boston scene and has 7 recordings in his name featuring Chris Cheek, Ben Monder, Matt Wilson, Ted Poor, Mick Goodrick, Donny McCaslin, Bob Moses, Allan Chase and others. He is currently a member of trumpeter Tiger Okoshi’s band and has toured in India, Europe, Japan and Ecuador and more.

Saxophonist Joshua Redman and pianist Brad Mehldau first performed together in Redman’s acclaimed quartet during the ’90s. In the decade and a half since, both Grammy Award–nominated musicians have reached international and critical acclaim while forging their own distinctive voices as modern jazz icons. The duo format fosters a new convergence for these friends to reunite for an intimate performance in which they can openly create music that swings and deeply connects to the spirit.

Doug Johnson adores fine wines and five-star cuisine and his music fits right into this lyrical and stylish groove. With classic tunes on his most recent CD--Live at the Royal Garden--including John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice," Johnny Mercer's "Emily" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You," Johnson presents a gentle, subtle and sophisticated palette that soothes the aesthetic soul. His trio at this Scullers date, celebrating Live at the Royal Garden, will also feature highly-praised bassist Edward Perez and polished drummer Mark Ferber.

Doug has just returned from an extensive March tour of Austria where he performed at top jazz clubs--The Royal Garden Jazzclub in Graz, Velenje in Slowenia, Zehnerhaus in Bad Radkersburg and Local and ZWE in Vienna. His group also performed in a special concert sponsored by the American Embassy at Innsbruck's American House. Doug has done similar tours in Austria for the past four years. During these tours, Doug also presents his innovative rhythm workshops at the Vienna Music Institute. Doug's most recent release, Live At the Royal Garden [May 2011] was recorded at the beautiful Royal Garden Jazzclub in Graz in 2010, with bassist Edward Perez and drummer Harald Tanscheck.

In addition to the 2011 release, Doug has two previous recordings, March of Time and Game Theory. He teaches at Berklee College of Music and Wellesley College as well where his well-received Embodying Rhythm workshops explore the basic elements of rhythm: forward motion, pulse, meter, cross-rhythms, linearity, verticality and also strategies for learning various "odd-meter" groupings while his Body Mapping workshops use his own instrumental physical technique as well as the Alexander Technique to attain unfettered performance strategies.

Doug holds a Masters of Music Degree from New England Conservatory of Music with extensive additional studies with jazz giants Hal Crook, George Russell, Thom McKinley, Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler and Burton Hatheway. He now performs with colleagues and artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Terri Lyne Carrington, Luciana Souza, Phil Woods and many others. Doug has performed frequently with Esperanza Spalding, including weekly jam sessions when she was living in Boston and in her band which opened for McCoy Tyner at Boston's 2006 Beantown Jazz Festival. Terri Lyne Carrington is another colleague with whom he performs, including a concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In addition, Doug is saxophonist Grace Kelly's regular keyboardist and with her group he has toured to London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Madrid, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Warsaw, Toronto, Los Angeles and New York and at such noted venues as the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and the Newport Jazz Festival.

The first hour of the event is a concert, featuring the host band - some of the finest musicians from the area and often featuring great players from NYC and beyond. After the first hour, we open it up to the “jammers” who get the opportunity sit in and hone their skills trading licks with some of the finest players in the area. Eastie Jazz Snapshot is a group assembled for events in East Boston such as Jazz Week East concerts at the Atlantic Works Gallery and 303 Cafe. This year we bring together music from the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Wayne Shorter to share them from a jazz perspective. Brazilian rhythms and back beats provide texture for jazz harmonies and hits while allowing the melodies be soothing. We will feature drummer and percussionist Reagan Gibson, bassist Derek Van Wormer, Michael Carey on flute and saxophone. Jess Cooper on vocals and a surprise guitarist.

The Berklee Global Jazz Institute (BGJI) is a performance program designed to foster creativity and musicianship through various musical disciplines, with pianist and composer Danilo Pérez as its artistic director. The Grammy Award–winning pianist and composer Pérez is among the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time. In just over a decade, his distinctive blend of Pan-American jazz, covering the music of the Americas, folkloric, and world music, has attracted critical acclaim and loyal audiences. As a bandleader, he has earned three Grammy nominations for his ebullient and innovative recordings.

The acclaimed Nick Grondin Group presents its music as modern instrumental storytelling, inspired equally by rock, folk and contemporary jazz styles. Using a broad palette of sounds – guitar, piano, bass, drums, trumpet, saxophone and voice – they aspire to connect the listeners and performers through sharing a music that is rich on many levels, intellectual and emotional.

Fourth in a series of free weekday noontime concerts inside South Station, each featuring a large-ish ensemble of a different instrument led by a prominent Boston-based musician. The musicians are all performing on a pro bono basis to help raise awareness of the great Boston jazz scene. And, of course, to have fun!

An energizing lunch break presented by JazzBoston, conceived and produced by Ken Field. A Trumpet Swarm will close the series on Friday.

The NEC Honors Saxophone Quartet, a 2011-2012 Honors Ensemble, will participate in the Boston Public Library's Never Too Late Series, presenting a program in the Rabb Auditorium at the central branch (Copley Square). These four outstanding NEC students will perform music written and transcribed for saxophone quartet from a variety of time periods and musical traditions.

In addition to being a singer, songwriter, and producer who has sold over 20 million albums, Brian McKnight is also a multi-instrumentalist who plays piano, guitar, bass, drums, percussions, trombone, tuba, flugelhorn, and trumpet.

In an industry known for a constantly revolving door of artists, McKnight has easily established himself with an enviable record of chart consistency, has toured successfully for over a decade, and has collaborated with performers across every genre including Quincy Jones, Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Diddy, Christina Aguilera, Rascal Flatts, Nelly, Vanessa Williams, Willie Nelson, and Kenny G.

Along with several Grammy nominations, Brian McKnight has been the recipient of American Music awards, Soul Train awards, NAACP Image and Blockbuster awards, and has been named Billboard Songwriter of the Year. He has crossed the boundaries of every medium. He has hosted Soul Session Countdown with Brian McKnight on BETJ. In addition, The Brian McKnight Morning Show on KTWV the Wave smooth jazz radio station, was a Top 5–rated show two years running. In 2009 McKnight started hosting his own radio show The Brian McKnight Show which ran in over 60 markets and was syndicated through ABC Radio. He also hosted his own nationally syndicated TV show The Brian McKnight Show.

McKnight has also used his vast industry knowledge as a red carpet host for Extra!, and in 2007, McKnight stepped into Broadway with a successful run as Billy Flynn in Chicago. He was also a contestant on the Donald Trump hit show Celebrity Apprentice and is currently touring nationwide in the Je'Caryous Johnson play Cheaper to Keep Her with Vivica A. Fox.

2011 will see the release of McKnight's 14th album, entitled Just Me, along with a worldwide tour and live DVD. McKnight is making the tour a family affair and will be joined by his brother Claude McKnight (Take 6) and sons BJ and Niko, also known as "BRKN RBTZ" (broken robots), for what promises to be a spectacular one-of-a kind show.

Guitarist Homero Villarreal Romero presents an evening of Latin jazz and traditional Mexican mariachi.

Aris Valeris is a piano player and composer trained in both the jazz and classical idioms. He started at the early age of 3 and worked with several classical teachers on his piano skills. However, throughout his childhood he always felt the need to create improvised music. As the son of two directors, he fulfilled this passion by composing or improvising live for more than 40 theatrical plays. In his teenage years, after having earned several musical awards for his work on classical piano, his attention was caught by the improvisational element of jazz.

Originally from Greece, Valeris moved to Boston in September 2009 after winning several scholarships to study at Berklee, where he studied piano performance and film scoring. His teachers included Ray Santisi, Stavros Lantsias, Nando Michelin, and Steve Heck.

In 2010 he created the Aris Valeris Quartet. The group is composed of four musicians with various musical influences and backgrounds. It came together to perform Valeris's originals and group compositions with a unique sound, energy, and emotion that flows through the deep connection of its members and grows in the music while being recorded or performed live.

Weekly jazz worship service combines the spiritual beauty of music by Monk, Ellington, Miles and others with Christian spirituality. All are welcome.

Led by bassist Bob Sinicrope the group features Jim Repa and Daniel Smith on woodwinds, John Pierce trombone, Russ Hoffman piano, John Baboian guitar and Adam Nazro piano. The group will focus on music from South Africa on this Ryles appearance.

Vocalist Deborah Pierre's senior recital, featuring an eclectic set of pieces by different artists around the world.

Back to the Garden: The Artistry of Joni Mitchell is a play with music and dance about the life and work of the iconic artist, written and performed by Berklee College of Music students. Back to the Garden features guest performer, Grammy Award-winning alumna Paula Cole, and music directed by Grammy Award-winning alumna Terri Lyne Carrington. Please note: Joni Mitchell will not be performing.
Hits like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Circle Game,” and “Both Sides Now” will be performed with new arrangements by students and faculty. Paula Cole will sing “A Case of You” and “Love.” Joni Mitchell, one of the most important female recording artists of the 20th century, is innovative and iconoclastic. Her music evolved from deeply personal folk in the 1960’s and ‘70’s to pop, jazz, and world music. Back to the Garden is about that journey, Mitchell’s commitment to change, and her fierce unwillingness to compromise.

Casey Crescenzo is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, most notably for the bands The Dear Hunter and The Receiving End of Sirens. He is also a producer who has worked with The River Empires, The Brobecks, The Cadence, Dakota, Draffin, His Hideous Heart, Hungry Tigers, Los Angeles Burning, The Great Green Machine Man, and Elliot Street Lunatic.

The Dear Hunter exploded onto the music scene in May 2007 when the band released their first full-length album, Act II: The Meaning of, and All Things Regarding Ms. Leading, a continuation of Act I. Casey will be performing a solo acoustic set, singing songs from The Dear Hunter. The music has more alternative and progressive rock tendencies and a wider variety of instrumentation.

The Dear Hunter is currently scheduled to play the 2012 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 13 and 20. In addition, they will be participating in the 2012 Bamboozle Festival on May 19.

Derek Krystek is rhythm driven singer songwriter proudly reigning from Pittsburgh, PA. Listeners may be intrigued by the honesty in his lyrics, and the intricacy of his guitar playing. Groups include Spirit Session, a free improvisation unit a la ECM records; the Ed Conley Quartet, and Hip Anonymous, a jazz fusion group.”

Henri Smith - vocals, Ben S. - piano, Rick Maida - bass Dave Hurst - drums.  Vocalist Henri Smith has been thrilling audiences in his hometown of New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, with his sophisticated swing and dramatic delivery of jazz, blues, and Cajun flavored music. He relocated to Massachusetts last year after losing his home to the hurricane Katrina disaster.

New Orleans born and bred, Henri Smith has long been a radio personality on WWOZ FM, the radio arm of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation. His radio show featured the contemporary jazz that he loves and now sings professionally. With many connections in the music world, he frequently served as emcee at the New Orleans Jazz Fest for artists such as Kermit Ruffins and Ellis Marsalis.

The Ryles Jazz Orchestra returns celebrating their 15th anniversary as a band. Trumpeter/Music Director, Frank Vardaros, started the Ryles Jazz Orchestra in 1997 keeping in mind the great tradition of a house big band in a major jazz venue (i.e. The Village Vanguard Band, Thad Jones Mel Lewis, Birdland Dream Band, to name a few). The band will perform the music of Maynard Ferguson with some special guests on what would have been Maynards 84th birthday.

The band has had great success backing such guest artists as Bob Mintzer, Jon Faddis, Slide Hampton, the late Nick Brignola, Arturo Sandoval, Marvin Stamm, Bill Watrous, to name a few. Also in 1998 the horn section of the band backed Arturo Sandoval at the Globe Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Saratoga Springs Jazz Festival and the JVC Jazz Festival at Carnegie Hall. The band has also done a series of tribute concerts including Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich and Frank Sinatra.

The band features some of the finest musicians in New England and beyond, including Jeff Stout, Marc Carlsen, Tim Mayer, Janusz Kowalski, Kenny Titmus, Eric Hewitt, Yoko Miwa, Rick Klane, Mark Sanchez, Dan Fox, Jerry Seeco, Steve Piermarini, and Frank Vardaros

Master teachers/perfomers Arni Cheatham (saxophones, found percussion) and Bill Lowe (trombone, tuba, didjeridu) welcome children to the sounds and fun of jazz. Meet Tyrone the Tenor Saxophone, Sally the Soprano, and the other members of the Reed Family. Learn how olde- and new-world blowing tubes produce their distinctive sounds. Improvise on a straw kazoo. Everyone participates as the children join the musicians "on stage" and make music together.

Every Saturday, the legendary pianist Harvey Diamond with Jon Dreyer on bass play the American Songbook and jazz standards in a way that is familiar yet invigoratingly original. Diamond, “one of the unsung heroes of the Boston jazz scene since the mid-1960’s,” was a protege of Lennie Tristano and has performed with Art Farmer, Sheila Jordan and countless others.

Yaure Muniz, trumpeter and former member of the renowned Cuban ban, Buena Vista Social Club, plays tonight with a group of the deepest and hottest Latin jazz musicians in Boston. Killing rhythms and incendiary playing makes this a very hot and fun performance.

“Music is spiritual and it heals. It soothes the heart and mind,” states Butler, who was born in Cape Town, South Africa. In the past year, his mother passed away, he lost one of his closest friends (Wayman Tisdale), and he supported his wife (Barenese) in her battle against cancer. “Sometimes it’s better not to tell people what you’re going through (while you’re going through it), but tell them after you’ve come through.”

Thus So Strong was born. For the singer-guitarist-songwriter-producer known for achieving chart-topping success, Grammy nominations and other accolades for his R&B, contemporary jazz, adult pop and gospel recordings, it’s his first urban record in quite some time. Rather than wallow in despair, as per usual the album finds Butler celebrating life and serving as a brilliant beacon of divine light.

This year's topic is "The Friends of Wally Walcott"—the jazz legends who knew Wally and worked at the club in the forties, fifties, and sixties, including Alan Dawson, J.C. Higginbotham, Joe Gordon, and Paul Gonsalves. Complementary light refreshments, cash bar.
