In 1969 Gunther Schuller, one of the foremost scholars, arrangers, composers, and conductors of our time, initiated the first fully accredited jazz studies program at the New England Conservatory of Music. Since that time, NEC has become a leader in the world of jazz education. NEC's faculty and alumni include some of the most influential players in jazz, such as Bob Brookmeyer, Jaki Byard, Jimmy Giuffre, George Russell, Jerry Bergonzi, Regina Carter, Robin Eubanks, Billy Hart, Cecil McBee, Dave Holland, Danilo Perez, Dave Douglas, Harvey Mason, Fred Hersch, John Medeski, and Luciana Souza.
